Gaze-Contingent Spatio-temporal Filtering in a Head-Mounted Display

چکیده
The spatio-temporal characteristics of the human visual system vary widely across the visual field. Recently, we have developed a display capable of simulating arbitrary visual fields on high-resolution natural videos in real time by means of a gaze-contingent spatio-temporal filtering [1]. While such a system can also be a useful tool for psychophysical research, our main motivation is to develop gaze-guidance techniques. Because the message an image sequence conveys depends on the exact pattern of eye movements an observer makes, we propose that in future information and communication systems, images will be augmented with a recommendation of where to look, of how to view them. Ultimately, we want to incorporate gaze guidance technology into mobile applications; such technology, integrated into a head-mounted display (HMD), could use computer vision techniques to enhance human visual performance. In our demonstration, we will show a first implementation of such a device in the form of a system that implements our gaze-contingent spatio-temporal filtering algorithm in an HMD with video-see-through. Subjects will be able to walk around, seeing their natural visual environment inside the HMD. We will demonstrate that we then can manipulate what the subjects see in real time.

Model-Free Head Pose Estimation Based on Shape Factorisation and Particle Filtering
Head pose estimation is essential for several applications and is particularly required for head pose-free eye-gaze tracking where estimation of head rotation permits free head movement during tracking. While the literature is broad, the accuracy of recent vision-based head pose estimation methods is contingent upon the availability of training data or accurate initialisation and tracking of sp...

Cycling is a phenomenon in urban transportation that has the ability to allocate a specific location at any moment in time. Accordingly, spatial analysis of bicycle trips can be accompanied by temporal analysis. The use of a GIS environment is commonly recommended to display the extent of the phenomenon's spatial changes. However, in order to apply and display changes over time, it will requir...
متن کاملComputational Modelling and Prediction of Gaze Estimation Error for Head-mounted Eye Trackers
Head-mounted eye tracking has significant potential for mobile gaze-based interaction with ambient displays but current interfaces lack information about the tracker’s gaze estimation error. Consequently, current interfaces do not exploit the full potential of gaze input as the inherent estimation error can not be dealt with. The error depends on the physical properties of the display and const...
متن کاملAdaptive Image-Space Sampling for Gaze-Contingent Real-time Rendering
With ever-increasing display resolution for wide field-of-view displays—such as head-mounted displays or 8k projectors—shading has become the major computational cost in rasterization. To reduce computational effort, we propose an algorithm that only shades visible features of the image while cost-effectively interpolating the remaining features without affecting perceived quality. In contrast ...
متن کاملImplementation of EOG-based Gaze Estimation in HMD with Head-tracker
Head-mounted displays (HMDs) are effective devices for creating immersive virtual environments. Intuitive movement field-of view (FOV) is possible in virtual reality (VR) space with a HMD equipped with a head-tracker. However, gaze targets are not accurately detectable by the measurement of head movements alone. An eye-tracker is needed to determine gaze positions; however, such trackers curren...
